Description Reclaimed Kingdom by Dana Claire
The Legend is true. The Fear is real. Under the cruel ministrations of its Queen, the Kingdom of D’Land is in peril. With King Harrison away in foreign lands and neighboring Kingdoms unwilling to intervene, there is no one to protect the people from poverty, harsh punishment, and unreasonable rules of law – except for the Band of Brothers. Struggling with the death of her mother and the legendary Syphon powers she inherited, seventeen year old Dru wants nothing more than to escape her old life and join the motley crew of ruffians, pilfering from the rich to feed the poor and pay their taxes. She’s able to do just that disguised as a lad, and even when her nature is discovered, nothing changes – except for the way her friend Hawkin treats her. But Dru’s new world is overturned when she and the Brothers seize the treasures of a Prince who threatens to reveal her identity. Together, Dru and her chosen family must find a way to reclaim her destiny and bring balance to the Kingdom. If not, there may be no hope left for anyone.Guest Review by Nora S.
The whole time that I was reading 'The Reclaimed Kingdom,' I kept being reminded of something that I just couldn't put my finger on. It took me a while to realize that the main character, Dru, who is a tomboy and a bit of a spitfire, reminded me so much of myself at that age.
Of course, I do not live in the fictional kingdom of D'Land but if I did, I would be happy to fight with the Band of Brothers like Dru does. Dru, who is seventeen, masquerades as a boy in order to fight with the Brothers, who are notorious for never taking in any girls. But most of the Brothers actually do know that she is a girl. She is just such a good fighter that they waive their rule.
Part of the reason that Dru is so skilled at combat is her power. Dru is a Syphon, a person gifted with the ability to draw from the emotions of the people around her and use them, whether it is for her benefit or not.
It is while running with the Brothers that Dru stumbles upon a carriage that just happens to bear a prince. Prince Dodge, is the monarch of a neighboring land called D'Wales and he and Dru know each other, although he does not remember her.
See, Dru has more than one secret and this is what led her to run away from her old life and join the Brothers in the first place. Once the secret comes out, everything in Dru's life will be changed and her destiny will be in her own hands.
An excellent YA fantasy and one that I would recommend to readers of all ages. 'The Reclaimed Kingdom' by Dana Claire is not to be missed!
Chapter 24
I leaped at Hawkin, sending him staggering backward. He lost his footing, tripping over the steps as we crashed to the ground. I made sure to grab the wrist holding the assassin fang—even without poison it was deadly—and my grip coupled with the fall sent it clattering away out of reach. A few arrows struck the stone where he’d just been, and I heard a ceasefire called as we tumbled. As I suspected, the king wouldn’t risk firing with my body in the way. I landed on top of Hawkin, and for now, his eyes were his own, full of pain and desperation. The shock of his assault on Dodge was disruptive but not powerful enough to break the queen’s hold. The tendril that held him was quickly growing back, thickening and swirling as she reclaimed control.
“End it,” he managed to whisper, and I knew he was telling me to kill him before he was taken again. “Don’t let me hurt you, too.”
“Never. I love you.”
