Excerpt:

Despite attempts to block him from her mind, Alice thought back to Micah’s goodbye, and her heart burned with resentment. How could he pack his things and leave? Had she been wrong in believing he was different?

As she walked across the yard to the main house, she felt a tap on her shoulder. Alice jumped, and her heart crashed into her ribcage with a startled jolt. Moving totally by instinct, she grabbed the offending arm and twisted. With her other arm, she elbowed the person in the ribs, causing him to grunt before dropping to the ground. She glanced down to see the prostrate form of Micah.

“What was that for?” He groaned. “I thought you’d be happy I stayed.”

“Oh my…” she choked out. “I didn’t know it was you. Never sneak up on a soldier.” Alice knelt beside him and brushed a hand over his head. “I’m sorry, Micah.”

He rested on his side. “I think you broke a rib.” Tears formed in his eyes.

He’d only recovered from one injury. Now, with a shot from her elbow, she’d dealt him another setback. If he couldn’t start training camp, she’d be at fault. “Where is the pain? Should I call an ambulance? I can’t believe I just hurt you.”

Huffing out a laugh, he wrapped his arms across his chest. “I’m fine, Alice. Don’t call 911.”

She had a strong desire to erase the grin off his face. Instead, she rolled him over with her foot so he gazed upward as she towered over him. “Someone will have to dial 911 after I’m done with you.”

“Please be merciful.” He pressed his hands together like in prayer. “I’m staying…which means I’m all yours for the next week, whether you want me or not.”
